Vocal Warm-Ups????

It's funny to me when I hear people say they want a vocal warm-up cd without taking any lessons first. A singer may warm-up with an array of vowels, scales and weird sounds in order to be primed for their vocal performance. The lights go down, the band walks out at the singer starts bellowing into the microphone having no real benefit from the warm-up exercises. All exercises I prescribe are Voice Builders. Sure, I may give a student a series of exercises to sing before they have a performance or speaking engagement, but it's in context of their overall  vocal plan and they have a very specific purpose.

When I see a singer 'warm-up' with a lip bubble and then proceed to scream without any resemblance of head voice, I wonder why on earth they bothered in the first place.

A vocal warm-up routine is only good if you know WHY you are doing it and HOW it helps you. I suggest even just 1 or 2 lessons before you endeavour to invest time on 'vocal warm-ups.'
